Medical Laboratory Technician (PRN) - Laboratory
Job Summary:

Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in different areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities of the Position:

Ability to function in the following areas of the clinical laboratory: Phlebotomy, Chemistry, Hematology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Microscopy.

Perform high-complexity testing under supervision of Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Technologist or the General Supervisor.

Performs phlebotomy, receive and place laboratory orders in the Laboratory Information System.

Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.

Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.

Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.

Responsible for keeping track of pending log throughout shift and before leaving for the day.

Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.

Responsible for maintaining and using various equipment in clinical laboratory.

Responsible for improving turnaround time for performance improvement.

Responsible for loading specific reagents to analyzers and preparing them for examination per policy and procedure.

Responsible for identifying chemical composition and concentrations and to observe the process of change (delta check).

Responsible for processing tests to send to reference laboratory and reporting results when received.

Responsible for performing and documenting maintenance log.

Records date and time of reagent open date.

Uses and maintains all clinical laboratory equipment, including blood cell analyzer, microscope, chemistry instruments, urinalysis instruments and coagulation instruments.

Performs procedures to count and identify blood cells and specialized hematologic procedures.

Responsible for inspecting stored blood for signs of spoilage, discards expired/spoiled blood.

Maintains inventory (units, reagents, etc.)

Responsible for documenting and relaying all DSHS reportables.

Attends at least 75% of staff meetings; read, sign, and return all monthly staff meeting minutes if absent.

Strictly maintains patient confidentiality and abides by all HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security rules.

Communicates the mission, vision, and values of the Hospital as well as the focus statement of the department.

Actively participates in the departmental and hospital-wide goals.

Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Observes infection control practices at all times.

Participates in staff training and education programs.

Position Requirements:

• Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technician is required.

• At least one MLT certification required (ASCP, AMT).

• Current BLS for healthcare provider certification within 30 days.

• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

• Must be proficient in basic computer skills, including Windows.

• Minimum of one-year experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

• Knowledge of Laboratory Information System.

Physical Requirements:

• Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

• Job requires medium lifting on an occasional basis.
