Referral Specialist
Job Summary: The Referral Specialist are the liaisons between medical professionals and their patients. They pass along information about patient's conditions and needs from one doctor to another. Referral Clerks may also be
responsible for scheduling appointments and keeping track of patient records. This includes the basic contact
information to detailed notes on previous visits or tests that been performed. Verifies insurances and receives,
processing, scheduling and following up on all medical referral requests, including in-house and outside referrals for diagnostic testing, medical specialists, or other providers. Responsible for obtaining prior authorization needed for testing or services. Supervised by the Clinic Office Manager.
Essential Responsibilities of the Position:
Answers telephones, greets patients and families in a professional manner.
Updates and files patient's medical records.
Assist with patient scheduling, filling out insurance forms and handles correspondence.
Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history, taking vitals;
confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient; answers questions within scope of practice.
Intakes patient medical history and records vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients.
Arranges hospital admissions and laboratory or ancillary services when needed.
Prepares and maintains records of patient data, including contact information.
Responsible for processing all referrals from providers and scheduling appointments with specialist or doctor's office.
Assists with registration process as needed.
May be assigned to other duties as needed.

Attends at least 75% of staff meetings; read, sign, and return all monthly staff meeting minutes if absent.
Strictly maintains patient confidentiality and abides by all HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security rules.
Communicates the mission, vision, and values of the Hospital as well as the focus statement of the department.
Actively participates in the departmental and hospital-wide goals.
Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Documentation meets current standards and policies.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Observes infection control practices at all times.
Participates in staff training and education programs.
Professional Requirements:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of six months to one year of related work experience.
• Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge.
Physical Requirements:
• Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.
• Job requires heavy lifting on an occasional basis.
