Hospital Controller – Job Description

Position Title: Hospital Controller
Department: Finance
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Hospital Controller oversees the financial integrity of Dimmit Regional Hospital and Dimmit Regional Hospital District by managing accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting processes, and internal controls. This role ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, healthcare accounting standards, and organizational policies. The Controller serves as a strategic financial leader and works closely with executives and operational leaders to support financial performance, sustainability, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

• Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, treasury, and payroll.
• Ensure monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements are accurate, timely, and compliant with GAAP and healthcare regulatory requirements.
• Lead month-end and year-end closing processes; ensure appropriate reconciliation and variance analysis.
• Coordinates and prepares external financial audit and reporting items (Cost Report workpapers, Tax workpapers, surveys, etc.).
• Completes other duties as assigned.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning

• Develop annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with department leaders.
• Monitor financial performance and provide analysis of variances, trends, and operational impacts.
• Support multi-year financial forecasting and long-term planning.

Internal Controls & Compliance

• Establish, maintain, and monitor internal controls to protect organizational assets.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer regulations, including CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, and audit requirements.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and manage annual audits.

Leadership & Strategic Support

• Supervise finance staff including Assistant Controller, Accountants, Payroll, and Accounts Payable.
• Provide training, mentorship, performance evaluations, and developmental support.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to analyze financial opportunities, risks, and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
• CPA preferred.
• Minimum of 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a healthcare environment.
• Understanding of critical access hospital reimbursement and cost reporting preferred.
• Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.

Knowledge

• GAAP, healthcare accounting principles, and cost accounting.
• CMS reimbursement rules, Medicare/Medicaid cost reporting, and hospital revenue cycle fundamentals.
• Budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
• Auditing standards and internal control frameworks.
• Financial system platforms (e.g., Cerner, Multiview, Paylocity, Quickbooks, etc.)
• Maintains their knowledge by keeping up with current developments and trends.

Physical & Work Requirements

• Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods.
• Occasional overtime during peak periods (month-end, year-end, audit).
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs of files/equipment if required.
